Tricks to Solve Blood Relation Problems
Use Symbols for Family Tree
The best way to solve quickly is by drawing diagrams. Use these symbols:
- □ (Box) → Male
- ○ (Circle) → Female
- ═ Double Arrow (═) → Marriage relation (husband-wife)
- → (Single Arrow) → Child (downward link)
- ↔ → Brother-Sister link
Example:
A is the father of B, and B is the mother of C.
□ A (Father)
│
○ B (Mother) ═ □ (Husband unknown)
│
C
So, A → Grandfather of C.
Think in Generations
- Same Generation → Brother, Sister, Cousin, Spouse.
- One Generation Up → Parents, Uncle, Aunt.
- Two Generations Up → Grandparents.
- One Generation Down → Children, Nephew, Niece.
- Two Generations Down → Grandchildren.
Replace “My” with the Person’s Name
Example:
Ravi says, “He is my father’s brother’s son.”
Step 1 → Replace “my” with “Ravi.”
→ Ravi’s father’s brother = Uncle.
→ Uncle’s son = Cousin.
Answer: He is Ravi’s cousin.
Decode from Right to Left (Coded Problems)
When symbols are given:
- Decode the rightmost relation first.
- Move step by step.
Example:
A + B means A is father of B.
B – C means B is sister of C.
So A + B – C = ?
- B – C → B is sister of C.
- A + B → A is father of B.
So A is father of C.
Elimination in MCQs
If options are given, remove wrong genders or wrong generation levels first. Saves time!
Shortcut Phrases
- Father’s father → Grandfather.
- Father’s mother → Grandmother.
- Mother’s brother → Maternal Uncle.
- Mother’s sister → Aunt.
- Father’s sister’s son → Cousin.
- Brother’s son → Nephew.
- Sister’s daughter → Niece.
Types of Blood Relation Questions
Direct Type

Solution:
- Ramesh → Brother of Suresh

Family Tree Type
These involve multiple generations.
Example:

Solution (draw symbols):
□ A (Father of B)
│
○ B (Mother) ═ □ D (Father)
│
C
So, A is Father-in-law of D.

Coded Type
Here, relationships are given in symbolic form.

A $ B means A is brother of B,
A # B means A is father of B,
